A filling is a dental treatment used for restoring a damaged, decayed or cracked tooth to its original form. The procedure uses a single material or a combination of materials to strengthen your tooth and prevent further decay.

Dr. Saalini Velamakanni at Northeast Dental Associates in Humble, Texas, offers various dental treatments for individuals and families to protect, maintain, and restore their oral health.

In this blog, we’re sharing a few important facts on dental fillings.

What Are the Different Types of Fillings Available?

There are a variety of options for dental fillings available across different price points. Dr. Velamakanni will help you choose one that is suitable for you medically and financially.

Here are the options to consider:

Gold Fillings

Also referred to as onlays or inlays, they consist of a combination of copper, gold, and other metals. They are among the more expensive options, less discrete, and known to last over 15 years.

Amalgam Fillings

Sometimes called silver fillings, they are made from a combination of mercury, tin, copper, and silver. Amalgam fillings are the most popular types of fillings and have been in use for a long time. They are highly affordable and last for decades.

Composite Resin Fillings

Otherwise known as tooth-colored fillings, composite resin fillings are made from a mix of acrylic resin and glass quartz or other materials. Their main benefit is that they blend in with your tooth’s natural color and are discreet. However, they are less durable compared to other alternatives.

What Are the Steps Involved in a Tooth Filling Procedure?

At Northeast Dental Associates, a regular dental filling procedure involves four simple steps:

  • Dr. Velamakanni will use an anesthetic to numb the area where the tooth needs filling.
  • Then, the doctor will use a drill, laser, or other equipment to clean out the damaged part of the tooth.
  • After clearing out the decay, Dr. Velamakanni will prepare the space to accommodate the filling. If the decay is close to the root, the doctor may apply an ionomer to protect the nerves and blood vessels.
  • In the final step, Dr. Velamakanni will apply the filling material and finish off the process by polishing it.
